To hear so many positive comments on our recent concert is something that truly brings that warm fuzzy feeling to the depths of my stony and icy heart. It's good to know that we sound decent (and in some ppl's opinion - good). Yet I know that this wasn't the best that we are capable of, given time.
I think I've been spoilt by the Choir Olympics standard - to me, it's not perfect until it's the standard worthy of a Choir Olympics finalist. Even when we were in Bremen last year, I thought the songs could've been better.
Which is not a bad thing - it means that we have lots of potential and therefore room for improvement and therefore room for growth and greater glory.
Boy I can't wait for Xiamen 2006.
First things first: Carolling. Weeeee!!!

Shopping
I just witnessed YL and WK on an online shopping FRENZY over Old Navy stuff...never saw them so excited over anything. Apparently there's an online sale:
sample:
"vocal indulgence. says:
i looking lah
vocal indulgence. says:
now
YL says:
pls they damn fast run out !!!!!
YL says:
i was like going to faint cos so stressed
YL says:
like from the time you add to the time you check out things can disappear!!"
YL was being the bossy one telling WK "DON'T USE VPOST OR YOU'LL BE (insert swar word) TAXED", and then WK was being his typical brainless self by asking stupid questions such as:
"Please enter your last name.
What do I do here?"
and then saying things like:
"okya i dun panic
i wanna go thru my purchases first
crazy lah like this!
i not woman.
i cannot panic"
I almost fell off my chair laughing....
but never mind. leave it to the women to sort these things out. YL gave line by line orders to guide WK from the process of clicking how to buy to checking out.
Such an educational experience. Boy am I glad I didn't go to work today.

Concert Day
Concert Day came and went. I woke up this morning feeling fine...and then i opened my mouth...and out came a CROAK...i now sound like a bass 5 and i'm sure I can beat Joel to the low D. ok i just tried. maybe now. but you get the point.
As always, there's a big adrenaline rush just before the concert. My heart was beating quite fast before that dreaded line for that stupid Maori song where I just can't seem to get the "i" vowel out of my mouth properly and I think ended up going sharp. oh well too bad for the choir. Jimboy had a much worse solo.
All in all I'm pretty pleased with the concert performance. It wasn't perfect (number of mistakes during the live session), but the sound was good, and we pretty much enjoyed ourselves.
I'm on leave today. Have a ton of files to look at tomorrow. Wonder how I should spend my day today.

Foot reflexology
I currently have few joys in life:
1. Choir - annual concert is tomorrow. This is an approx. 8 year joy so far.
2. FOOT REFLEXOLOGY. This is a recently discovered joy.
This post is dedicated to Chloe who says foot reflexology is painful and stupid.
I think foot reflexology is the next best thing to sex. It is extremely pleasurable, relaxing, and brings a sense of wellbeing, and induces a very good and sound night's sleep. This is from my personal experience. As I go for more sessions, I find out hidden benefits, like it clears my sinuses and makes me sing better. Therefore I am going for a 1 hour session tmr so that I can sing better during the concert. I believe this is termed "Investment".
According to http://skepdic.com/reflex.html:
QUOTE
One reason foot massage may be so pleasurable and is associated with significant improvement in mood is that the area of the brain that connects to the foot is adjacent to the area that connects to the genitals. There may be some neuronal overlapping. Neuroscientist V.S. Ramachandran writes of a person whose leg was amputated and who experienced orgasms in his phantom foot (1998: 36-37). “The genitals are right next to the foot in the body’s brain maps,” he notes, and speculates that this fact may account for foot fetishes.
UNQUOTE
Therefore my claim that foot reflexology being the next best thing to sex is not unfounded.
According to Wikipedia:
Quote:
In reflexology, it is believed that there is a "vital energy" that is circulating between organs of the human body, which penetrates into every living cell. Whenever this energy is blocked, the zone of blockage will be affected. The reflex zones can reflect the blockage of energy in different organs. Therefore, if someone has a problem in a particular organ, when a reflexologist presses on the corresponding reflex zone or zones, the person will experience pain.
The pain is believed to originate from the deposition of crystals in the reflex zone. With proper massaging techniques, these crystalline structures could be broken down and the pain would be gone. Simultaneously, the pressure applied to the reflex zones by the reflexologist is thought to pass through the nerves to dissipate energy blocks. It is therefore believed that reflexology can help heal organ sickness.
Reported reactions
Case studies, not statistical conclusions, demonstrate that people treated by experts in reflexology, report a lot of reactions, including the following:
During treatment
A sense of well-being
A sense of relaxation
Client may sigh, breathe deeply or yawn
Fall asleep
Client may feel like laughing or crying
Experience a tingling sensation in the feet or through the body
Pin stick type feelings in the feet over congested areas
Temperature change either hot or cold
Nausea
A sense of unease due to emotional problems
A sense of comfort
A sense of lethargy, nausea or tearfulness
After treatment
Cold-like symptoms such as a running nose as catarrh and sinus congestion are cleared.
A cough as mucus is cleared from the lungs and respiratory passages
More frequent urination
More frequent bowel movements
Flatulence
Headaches
Increased sweating
Skin rash
Yawning and tiredness
Energizable

I read with disbelief today's papers and found this letter in the papers. To think that this letter was newsworthy material is shocking to say the least - especially that last bit of the letter.
It's 12.30 pm. I'm supposed to have woken up at 8 am to do work. I haven't done it. Supposed to get a haircut. Haven't done that either. Sigh. NO TIME NO TIME.
QUOTE
ON TUESDAY I tried the new lamb burger at a Burger King outlet. I was enjoying the succulent flame-grilled meat until my eyes wandered over the promotional flier used as the tray liner. To my horror, I found myself reading a wickedly macabre account of Mary Had A Little Lamb.
The story starts with the familiar Mary who had a lamb. The next line takes a bizarre twist, informing us that hers wasn't flame-grilled or anything.
It goes on to claim that Burger King's lamb is juicier, tastier and comes in two flavours. It concludes by promising that whichever flavour we pick, we will enjoy it more than Mary's.
Nursery rhymes have been parodied to brilliant satirical effect but something tells me that that is not the effect that Burger King was trying to conjure up. The image of a flame-grilled Mary's lamb is the last thing I want to imagine while biting into a lamb burger.
Thank goodness my five-year-old daughter wasn't with me. She would have confused it with the story of the Big Bad Wolf.

Secrets
Mr. X has a secret that he was too modest to brag about. I thought he finally got himself a girlfriend. Unfortunately, it was something rather more mundane. Still, enough for a dim sum treat for us. Glad he kept us in mind though - totally unexpected treat.
VC's annual concert is two days away. I can't wait. Fortunately I'm on leave on Monday. As with all concerts, I'm rather excited. The excitement will end on Sunday night and I'll be wondering what to do for the other three months for the rest of the year:
1. look for new apartment.
2. clear up my stuff.
3. work. although i freaking don't want to.
I'm stuck with the prospect of having to read stuff over the weekend.
I'm going to be stuck in the bloody office until at least 2 am today.

I'm so fucking swamped. No use complaining, life goes on. How to enjoy my concert this weekend?
I'm also annoyed because a job opening at double/triple my salary that I didn't apply for that was perfect for me went to someone from my year from another company who has zero prior experience. Gagggggh is the right expression to use here. I would've been much happier if it went to some angmoh.

I am a rotten pig
I snapped at my secretary today a bit and then made her cry. Now I'm feeling extremely guilty. Maybe I am a mean boss.

I think I have a problem
Firstly before I start can I say that I've spilt a huge mug of water all over my keyboard while the computer was on and it was dripping water all over and it's now wonky and giving me caps when I don't want caps. I hope it dries by tomorrow and works fine after that. SHIT BOTH MY SHIFT KEYS RE SPOILT. My right shift key gives me aN A. my left shift key thinks it's a tAb button. And then my letters randomly cAPitalise itself like i'm some immAture teenaGer. see it happened AgAIN. unintentionaLly. i shALl i haVE to cALl my IT depaRtment tomorrow.
I have a problem. I don't like stupid people. Stupid people annoy me. According to some stupid test I took sometime back, I'm in the 99th percentile of brain power in the world. That means that there are 5.94 billion people dumber than me in the world. if you ASsume thAT 50 percent of thAT haS an ACceptAble level of intelligence, i still haVe the problem thaT i will find hAlf the people i deaL with extremely stupid.
however, being in the service industry, i often hAve to deal with STUPID people who expect me to rubber stamp their traNsACtions and then when i point out thAT something's not quite right, they talk to me in an accusAtory tone AS if it's my fault. thAT ASide, they ASk me stupid questions.
mAYbe i should've been aN AcAdemic. yeAH. then i would've probaBly gone into engineering. don't have to service anyone AS An AcAdemic. if you don't like me then screw you i'm meANt to be eccentric ANywAY>
ok this erratic cApitaLisATion is reaLly getting on my nerves. let's give my keyboARd A bAng.
doesn't seem to work any better.
so bASically i've haD A long dAy with meetings And then tons of semi scoldings from my boss thaT i need to Accept thaT the industry is stupid And we just have to deAl with it. longgg day.

Being Clever
Sometimes trying to be too clever isn't really very clever at all.
I was irritated by the countless people interrupting my concentration every 5 mins with some question or other. So I thought if I plugged myself into music nobody would bug me. So I plugged my earphones into my PC.
Except that the cord wasn't comfortably long enough. Which got me really irritated.
Then I came up with this BRILLIANT idea. I thought, hey, why don't I connect my bluetooth enabled Dell Axim to my computer, and then stream music through the bluetooth connection?
That seemed like a brilliant idea. And I spent 2 hours in the afternoon, and 2 hours after dinner doing just that.
I finally got it working 45 mins ago. Except that it was stupid. Apparently the bluetooth connection can't keep up with my 192kbps music. So the music would play 1 second, and then stutter. Like a really s-l-o-w internet connection.
So I wasted almost 4 hours of time, i.e. time which I could've spent billing about $1100 in billable hours.
Conclusion: go to sim lim, and BUY the LONG CORDED headphones. Cost: $65. PROBLEM SOLVED.
Lesson to self: next time, don't be so clever.

The Aftermath
So I was absolutely right. The Landlord is not renewing my lease. They say that they are relocating back to Singapore and so they need the place back.
Fair enuff. I still felt a bit miffed though 'cos it means I have to go look for a new place to rent. Annoyance. Felt miffed, then sort of reluctant acceptance, and then resignation to fate.
While I felt miffed, I stole 2 mini-bars of of Timeout from the fridge and ate them. They aren't mine. I have no conscience. "Sin" food (pun intended) never tasted so good.
Sort of agreed with an ex-classmate to stay in a new place. However, ex-classmate is a girl and I don't think it's quite a good idea. I suspect it probably won't turn out.
I had no idea Terrence reads my blog. Thanks for the comment - I can't buy HDB resale though - not allowed to.

I am depressed
Reached home last night and saw this note on my door:
"Dear Mr. xxx
I would like to talk to you personally on some matters. Please let me know when would be a good time for us to speak. I think late nites would be good for you but please let me know. Prefably before Sunday night. I have not been able to meet you since my return to Singapore last Saturday.
Please pardon me for leaving a note on your door.
Regards
XXX"
A couple of things bug me:
1. the use of the term "Mr. XXX". Nobody calls people Mr. It's unfriendly.
2. "some matterS". i.e. more than one matter. ie many matters. What could it be.
3. The urgency
4. The extreme politeness. This is metaphorically termed the eye of the hurricane.
So I think I'm about to get my lease terminated in October when it runs out with no hope for renewal. I was hoping not having to move. It's such a hassle + unnecessary stress.
So that got me in a confused and irritated state the whole day. We were supposed to meet for lunch with a bunch of friends. I promised at 10 am that I would call this bummer dude at 11 am to wake him up, but promptly forgot all about it until 12 pm when it was too late. Much to everyone's annoyance. SORRY!!! The upside of it was that cute Anonymous Hot ex temp SMUrfette was visiting today and then we got to have lunch with all the other secretaries that she was working with and I got to steal furtive glances in SMUrfette's direction at lunch which I insisted paying for.
So anyway. Back to the depressing day point.
It's not as if I love to live there. I positively hate living in a rented place. I think I'm someone who values my privacy. Everytime I hear the landlords outside, I lock myself up in my room and refuse to come out. And when they are gone, I will go out to toilet etc. And then I go out of the house and come back late. And weekdays, I work and come back late after they have retired to bed. As a result of which I have managed to not see their faces for 2 weeks. Hence note on door.
I think I should go buy my own place. I should be able to afford part payment for a place after the year end bonus although it will wipe out my entire life savings. And I'm not looking forward to the obscene instalments that I have to pay for. But this kind of stuff shouldn't be rushed into. Need time to look. I haven't been very proactive in this respect for a couple of reasons:
1. I view buying a home here as a sign that I wish to stay here long term. I haven't decided if I want to. But with each passing day, the desire to relocate diminishes. I've been procrastinating the decision for ages with the effect that I haven't even taken up Permanent Residence yet because I want to keep my money liquid and not stuck in some stupid CPF black hole until I'm 55 which is plain ridiculous - I can manage my own money thank you very much.
I suppose the argument goes I can sell the place anytime, but the point is buying a house is to an extent a step towards making this tiny red dot my permanent home and I just don't feel ready to make that choice yet. I suppose I should really just make up my damn mind what I want to do soon. The period since graduation till now is really like some transient blur in my life.
2. Houses are RIDICULOUSLY expensive here. It's just totally obscene how much they cost. Hence must be careful.
3. I don't know how to start looking.
So, there we are. It's 9 pm. I have an appointment with some friends at Raffles Place at 9.30 pm to have a drink or so. And then I'm going home to face the music of getting kicked out in October.
To rent or not to rent, that is the question
Whether 'tis better on the pocket to suffer
The slings and arrows of dumbass landlords
Or to take arms against a sea of banking vermin

Ever Late
I'm supposed to be in Plaza Sing in 15 mins. I haven't even brushed my teeth yet. I've been lazing on my computer the whole morning. Me thinks me is going to be late.

You know you're spending way too much time in the office when:
1. You spend more money buying stuff to upgrade your office computer than you do on your home computer i.e. 2nd video card, 17" swivel LCD screen, $150 headphones, upgraded soundcard, extra 512 MB RAM.
2. You STILL want to buy some more stuff for your office
3. You spend more time cleaning up your office to make it more pleasant than you do your room at home.
and the NUMBER ONE INDICATOR:
4. Your boss asks you in the course of conversation: "So, what kind of girls do you like? Intellectual ones, or slutty ones?". Mouth agape. I thought it was amusing but didn't really answer the question.

Carl's Junior
The latest fast food joint in town. Located along Robinson Road, it offers yet another avenue for late workers like me to stuff our faces and give ourselves a heart attack in the process.
Junk food is just that - junk food. It has zero nutritional value. But once in a while when you feel naughty and want to stuff your face on illogical food, it fills up your bottomless pit of a stomach with food designed to be addictive/tasty.
The burgers are rather expensive though. VERY expensive actually. The sets generally come for about $10 each, which is like way too much to pay in my opinion considering you can get a decent meal at a cafe for that price. I guess it's more of Lau Pa Sat for me.
The staff there are quite the scumbags. The sets come in regular size, with the option to upgrade to medium for 50 cents and large for $1. When they take your order, they don't ask whether you want to "Up Sai?" like in McDonalds and Burger King. They are so insidious - they ask you "medium or large sir?", and I had to emphasise that I wanted the normal one without any "upsize" (almost said "up sai" to them). Yet another way for people to pile on the pounds.
They also have this interesting concept called the "Low Carb option" which is basically where they do away with the bun and wrap your patty with a big piece of lettuce. Very messy to eat if you ask me.
But the irony of the situation is that the "low carb option" if you buy with a set comes with a pack of fries which is Carb-heaven and completely beats the purpose of having a "low carb option". And the diet drink (Coke Light Lemon) tastes like diluted detergent water which sucks.
I'm sleepy. Shoudln't have stayed so late in the office last night.
My aircon at home broke down. The landlady must be prancing around with joy. Hope she gets it fixed soon. Two nights of sleeping without aircon has made me cranky. On the bright side, it wakes me up earlier since it's too hot to sleep in so I've been in the office before 9.30 am both days. Which is a HUUUUGE achievement.
