I am a WORM.

Nelson C has discovered (finally) that lots of us have these things called blogs. And he cleverly gave me the blog address of an ex-classmate, http://www.dsng.net/

Having read said blog, I now feel like a worm, because said ex-classmate is such an accomplished fella.

Listen to his list of accomplishments, which I shall dissect paragraph by paragraph to prove my assertion that I am a worm.

I was born in Singapore in 1978 and am now working back in Singapore. About a million miles of travel separate the two clauses of that sentence. - ok definitely not a million miles for me. more like er Singapore, malaysia, singapore malaysia. whoppee.

I hold an A.B. (magna cum laude) in Economics from Harvard, where I graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 2001. My senior thesis was on the way income affects the preferences for living in urban areas. I also delivered a few lectures on Dialects of English for a linguistics class. - I'm an A(lumni), NUS. What a wonderful contraction: ANUS. I'm an ANUS.

I wrote for three editions of the budget travel guide Let's Go (Let's Go: Britain and Ireland 1999, Let's Go: London 2001, and Let's Go: New York City 2002), and was the editor of the 2000 edition of Let's Go: Britain and Ireland. That means I've lived in Boston, London, and New York. I miss all three cities. I miss Harvard Square and Fenway Park; I miss the record stores of Berwick St; I miss the East Village and Brooklyn. Yes, travel writing was a pretty sweet job. This site was launched in 2000, with the blog added in 2002. - OMG stop. I am a worm!

4 jobs you've had in your life
Travel writer (amazing job)
Research assistant (on race relations in Crown Heights, Brooklyn)
Assistant Director, Strategic Planning
Assistant Director, Air (climate change work - can't complain)

- hello. You're 28. I'm 27. ARGH. I've held one job.

4 places you've lived
Singapore
Cambridge, Massachusetts
London
New York City

- I'm stuck in Singapore. I am a WORM.

Tri-Lamb Material
60 % Nerd, 17% Geek, 52% Dork
For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.
You scored better than half in Nerd and Dork, earning you the coveted title of: Tri-Lamb Material.

The classic, "80's" nerd, you are what most people think of when they think "nerd," largely due to 80's movies like Revenge of the Nerds and TV shows like Head of the Class. You're exceptionally bright and smart, and partly because of that have never quite fit in with your peers or social groups. Perhaps you've realized, or will someday, that it is possible to retain all of the things that you like about being brilliant and still make peace with the social cliques around you. Or maybe you won't--it's really not necessary. As the brothers of Lambda Lambda Lambda discovered, you're fine just the way you are and can take pride in that. I mean, who wants to be like Ogre, right!?

Congratulations!

Impatient

One of my six downsides it seems.

All and good. Right now, I am IMPATIENT. I can't wait for my house to be built!!!!! I am hoping it will be ready by the end of this year. I still haven't sorted out my finances though....

It's terrible. I'm *flirting* with this banker whom I've never met in person. I don't do flirting. My friend (who has seen her) says she's cute. My other friend says I'm weird.

We've got something on next Monday. It feels like I'm on one of those blind date game show things.

Stress of fulfilling unreasonable expectations. STRESS.

Wait. I suddenly have a sense of deja vu...ok this is weird.

Failed Experiments

I have been rather frustrated recently because I have not been very efficient at work and I'm trying to find ways to be more efficient with my time so that I can finish more work and, er, theoretically go home earlier.

So I came up with this experiment to give dictation to my secretary. Ie i read into a voice recorder, and someone else transcribes it. Supposed to save 1/3 - 1/2 of the time you spend typing. Plus, dictation is supposed to sharpen your thought and oral skills.

So I tried it, but the result was quite crappy - like full of typos. I suppose they are forgiveable 'cos it's like names and stuff. But anyway, I was quite disappointed. Somemore whole morning and over lunch I was scouring over lunch to find recording programs for my PocketPC. So instead of ending up more efficient, I wasted the whole morning.

It's so frustrating to have all these thoughts in your head that you want to get on paper but no efficient way of getting it out.

Typing is going to cause my CTS soon.

I suppose I need to learn to write more briefly instead of rambling. What a lot of effort.

I can't remember what my other failed experiments were.

Today is Valentine's Day. I maintain that it's a bloodsucking day. However, a few of us singles are going to go Brewerkz tonight to partake in some wholesome drunken revelry. This reminds me of a song. AAAaaaaa a-a-a-a-aaaaaa. Competition song.

Speaking of which, I have been having these grand visions / dreams about going on stage again to perform. I will never forget Bremen 2004. The sheer thrill in the practices leading up to the competition when you discover new joyous things about the songs every practice, like new chords and new angles to the song. The awe of watching other choirs perform. The sheer adrenaline rush backstage waiting for our turn to go on stage. The single minded focus of following the conductor on stage. ok I admit I was annoyed watching those stupid judges keep checking their tuning forks as if we were off key. The joy of the results. The disappointment of missing first place. The brainelessness of wandering around town aimlessly. Here's to Xiamen 2006!

I have a lunch this Thursday. I'm nervous. Probably derives from insecurity. What if I'm a complete bore. There's noone to cover me to talk. What if I'm a disappointment!!!! Think i shall be a wreck post lunch.

Supposed to go wakeboarding two weeks from now. Scary.

Sleepy. Sleep. Tmr think of more ways to be efficient.

Chinese New Year

I forgot to buy my train tickets this year for Friday night (to arrive by Sat morning, i.e. eve of CNY, so as to be in time for CNY reunion), and instead bought tickets for Saturday night to arrive Sunday morning. Got an earful for that, but oh well. It wasn’t much of a reunion anyway. My grandpa, the sole surviving grandparent on my dad’s side, passed away sometime last year, and I thought it would be weird as there would be no central figure holding the whole group together. True enough, this year’s CNY on my dad’s side seemed a bit weird. The siblings went for a reunion buffet dinner (crap food I heard) at some clubhouse, while I made my way back on the train.

I arrived on Sunday, and had some homecooked food for lunch followed by a three hour nap. Emmanuel arrived in KL at about 6 – I promised to take him out to stuff our faces on the infamous Ramli Burger – and I said I’d pick him up after I did some obligatory visiting. Went to my cousin’s place, said hi to a few relatives for 30 mins, which is the extent of my visit, and called Emma’s hotel – oops, he hadn’t eaten dinner yet. Guilt stricken me made my virgin drive to KL unaided, and I’m glad to say I didn’t get lost so full marks for sense of direction there. Unfortunately, I think he picked the wrong time to come to KL as everything was shut. We drove back to PJ, and all my known Ramli Burger stalls were not open!!!! We went on a driving merry go round in search of the elusive Ramli Burger. I even called up my Malaysian friends demanding to know where I can get Ramli Burger, but they weren’t helpful at all. The whole thing was like a scene right out of Harold and Kumar goes to White Castle, except we didn’t get the burgers in the end – we ended up eating satay, roti telur, lots of teh tarik ais, and some crappy excuse for a burger. So it was a failed outing. Sorry!!!!!!

Spent the next 2 days in Melaka – jams on the North South highway were like shit – I was driving back from Melaka – a journey ordinarily of 2 – 2.5 hours – it took me 5.5 instead, crawling around Seremban at 20 km/hour. On top of that, we had to pay toll. Talk about slap in the face.

It was weird seeing my relatives in Melaka – so much has happened in the last year that I kinda forgot half of them. My great aunt seemed a lot fatter – her diabetes condition got worse, while my great-uncle seemed to suffer from initial bout of Alzheimer’s – it’s scary – they were perfectly fine last year.

Had to entertain a whole bundle of nosy questions as well – like how much are you making, oh, you bought a house? How much? How’s the job, how’s the bonus, got girlfriend or not? Why so fat? Etc. Bah.

Otherwise, it was a pretty relaxing 2 days, just eating and sleeping.

Came back today after 5.5 hours driving on that damned highway, and met up with some old friends. Stuffed our faces on some good old fashioned Roti Telur + Roti Canai + Teh Halia Ais, after which we went to chill out at some bar in Sri Hartamas till 2 am downing Kilkenny and Guiness. What debauchery! What fun!

My parents have decided that they must have an ipod. Each. Guess who will have to set them up. Me. They have about 150 CDs to convert. Die. I start tomorrow. Best part is, the home computer has died. I need to fix it up first. How to finish on time?!!?!!?!?
